DVD playback in multiple DVD drives

I have a self built machine that has a CD/DVD-RW combo drive as
/dev/hdc. DVD playback worked fine from this drive until I added a
second CD/DVD drive as /dev/hdd. Now DVD's will only play in the
newly installed drive hdd. When trying to play DVD's in hdc xine reports
an error in a popup window "The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have
enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g.: no disc in
drive). (/dev/dvd)" After the first popup a second popup appears stating
" -xine engine error- There is no input plugin available to handle
'dvd:/'. Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist."
Audio CD's play just fine in both drives and so do self burned photo cd's.
I'm not sure what needs to be changed or corrected in either xine or config
files to re-enable DVD playback in the combo CD/DVD burner drive (hdc)
Any help solving my problem from list members would be greatly
appreciated.
Roger
