I'm late chiming in here, but I'll add a few comments anyway.
If you turn off journalling on your hfs+ it will mount read-write -
it's the journalling that's not well supported so they mount it read
only.
If you don't want to do that (I did it that way for my iPod, but I can
see wanting journalling on my system drive) you could make a small
fat32 partition to share documents with.
Lastly there's a sourceforge project that will let OSX read ext3
drives so you get data from the other side -
