[Feisty] Normal ways to kill xserver don't work

Like Vincent, I can stop/restart X in the usual manner on an up-to-date
Feisty using 

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

and restart it etc. ,  with no problems. Looks like it may be
hardware-specific ?
