I don't think the time between releases matters that much (Look at how
late Vista was).
What matters is how long a given distro will be supported. Ubuntu LTS is
a step in the right direction, and that's what matters: if Dell chooses
ubuntu, it'll choose 6.06 LTS because of the (at least) 3 years of updates.
With debian you get more than 3 years (when was Woody released?), but if
they speed things up in the future (like if they for any reason decide
on releasing every 6 months) it might be less than that.
