Quite possibly he knows other things, but this he does not :)
Or he has so much clue that it is a breeze for him to jiggle
incompatible repos (e.g., with apt-pinning) but I would not recommend
that to anyone

It's not a very good idea. While Debian and Ubuntu are compatible to a
large degree, and share many of the same source packages, the binary
packages are not identical due to having been built independently. This
causes unexpected effects in the package management system, up to and
including breaking a working system.

Essentially all of the software in Debian is also available in Ubuntu
repositories, so there is no reason to mix the two."

In all versions of Ubuntu since 4.10, e.g.:

Expected answer :)

I see. Only the LTS (Long Time Support) versions ever get updated
install CDs since they are supported for 3 years (desktop) or 5 years
(server). AT this time there is only one LTS, 6.06 (Dapper).

Since there is a new in-between release (like 6.10, Edgy) every 6
months, no updated install CDs are being made available, at least
officially. I don't know if any organisation creates regular snapshots.

Good luck,
