Jittery Mouse Driving Me Crazy!

I have a Logitech mx 610 cordless laser mouse installed on my dual boot
machine. For some reason, it won't move smoothly under Ubuntu, though it
works fine under Windows. Instead of the pointer moving smoothly, it jumps
around, a few millimeters or so off course seemingly randomly. Imagine if
your mouse pointer had 8 cups of coffee or so and you get the picture. If I
place a sheet of blank paper under the mouse, it moves smoother (not smooth
enough, though), so I'm assuming that the windows driver has some sort of
smoothing algorithm that the Linux driver doesn't have. Maxing out the
sensitivity preference helps, but it seems like I need to turn it up even
further to make it smooth enough. Any suggestions on how to correct this
really annoying problem?
BTW, it's not a range issue, so please don't suggest that I try moving the
reciever. This mouse has extremely good range, so I can move the mouse clear
across the room & still get equally good (or bad, actually) results.
Thanks!
