Hi, DVD/CD burners are now _dirt_ cheap (your definition of "dirt
cheap" may vary depending on where you live and your local cost of
living).
I can pick up a CD-RW/DVD+-RW for $40 CAD (~$34 USD) and I'm sure
there are comparable stores in your jurisdiction (or, you could also
do mail order for an extra $5). e.g.

However, I see a logic problem with your solution:
If you can _read_ the CD to make a copy of it to a DVD, why can't you
boot from that same CD?
Also, I've never experienced a CD/DVD-ROM failing that way (that's not
to say that it can't happen!). I've only ever had DVD-reading ability
go before CD-reading ability. It's easier for the laser to read CDs
than DVDs and it's also easier for the laser to read pressed CDs and
DVDs than it is for it to read burnt CDs/DVDs.
