My recommendation is to find a couple of laptops that you want. Then 
find out from searching the net if there are any problems with these 
laptops and linux. Pretty much you can get anything to work with linux, 
some easier than others though. If I was going to buy a second hand 
laptop I'd always go for an IBM Thinkpad, they're built so solidly, you 
should do well with a second hand one. Thing with second hand laptops is 
that the battery is often worn out. :(
