dial up connection

Can someone please help on this problem of mine. I want to use Thunderbird 
and have a connection like/similar to that given when using kppp. I am using 
Ver 6.06 Lts.

Since I started with ver5.10 I have never managed it. It is a real brick 
wall to me. I have managed to use wvdial and that worked but never quite 
found out how to get them all together. My connection to the web is limited 
in time and cost. My 'contacts/informanta/helpful friends' here have not 
been able to help either.
