If you use VMware, you can hook up the entire physical disk drive to  
the virtual machine and install Edgy or Feisty from there. This will  
even write a new Master Boot Record with grub in it. Installing Edgy,  
switching to Feisty's apt repositories and installing just the 2.6.20  
kernel was sufficient for my DG965SS board to boot. For graphics, you  
want to update the xorg stuff and install the i810 driver as well.
