Old sound device

I managed to get ubuntu installed on my old PC using the alternate CD - 
thanks for the advice.

But I have no sound output.

Machine: <VIA Technologies VT82C693ABX>
Processor:    Intel x86 Family 6 Model 8 999MHz
Sound device: Creative AWE65

OS tells me it can't recognize any sound device.
Previously installed SUSE handled the sound device just fine, as do 
prior WIndows installations.

Any suggestions regarding possible sources for drivers for this thing?
Or other possible solutions?
