It's mainly the economy of scale than anything else. Ogg players are made
by mostly no-name companies with little to no shelf-space exposure in the
large electronics stores. They have to recover their costs with far less
units sold than Creative or Apple does. Because of that they can't cut their
margins as tight so their units cost more.
The real question is why the large companies don't support Ogg since there
are no additional fees and development isn't much harder than any other
format. I mean, c'mon, if Rockbox can hack an entire firmware with *more*
formats without having the luxery of a development environment the company's
that produce the units have I see no excuse for them to not have more than 3-4
measly formats on their units.
