Upgrade v Reinstall

To jump in this topic...

What if I had modified my system a bit. Let's say I have a custom kernel and
recompiled several packages myself instead of using apt. Or some custom
libraries or drivers.

How would a dist-upgrade disturb those things? Just a 'would like to know'
question for now...
