apt-get won't update

I haven't tried any app that might use my Internet connection other than
apt.
I can't use firefox as it isn't yet well supported in Orca as the Orca
and Firefox teams are still working on it.
I am wondering if something needs changing in Network settings before my
BT connection is recognised?
The only wireless connection I have is at one of the places where I
attend a few lugs in my area.
