I would suspect that the kernel version is different between Knoppix and
the latest Feisty updates. So I think that you were caught by the latest
conversion/reversion between PATA/SATA device naming in the Feisty kernel.
What worked for me is this:
$cd /dev
$sudo MAKEDEV -v scd-all
and then reboot so the kernel can assign the devices properly. Can't
hurt to try this.
