This is exactly what I needed (but couldn't get working) this
past weekend when I installed Feisty in my daughter's
computer. After the install was fully completed and customized
to her liking, we changed out her video adapter from an ATI to
nVidia to get 3D acceleration working properly. Coming
recently from OpenSUSE, I was trying to start feisty in "init
3" from the grub menu but couldn't figure out where to put the
request.

At this point, after reading this thread, I understand that
"init 3" would not have worked anyway. It was very simple in
OpenSUSE, just enter "init 3" at the kernel options prompt.
Even booting into recovery mode in Feisty didn't work for us.
I kept getting errors while booting. I ended up re-installing
everything for her and now it's up and running but it would
have been much easier to be able to boot without xserver
running and "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg".

Where exactly in the grub menu would you append the "1" to
boot into text mode only (no xserver) for a one time
occasional need?

Thanks!
