Like to start up at tty console instead of X windows

That's perfectly fine for any who want what you asked for to be normal behavior on every boot. One point of my reply was an attempt to elicit a Debian method of replicating the ease of the RedHat
runlevel system where any time you want to temporarily switch to or from having X start automatically or not you can simply specify an alternate runlevel from Grub.
