Scripting Apt-Get (pop-up screens, e.g. with kernel updates)

What update manager? I'm at a command line, and all I know about are
apt-get and dpkg. Also, I thought apt-get was the "update manager." Is
there something else? I'm looking into it now anyway. Thank you!
