Matt, thanks for the input. Unfortunately, the modem/router uses WEP,
not WPA. 

P.S. - I would like to know if NetworkManager not conecting to a host
that doesn't broadcast a network name, is that a hardware "bug", a
software "bug", or a "feature"? 

And I hope the local coffee house with a wireless hot spot broadcasts
its network name . . .  or they won't be getting my business.
