Mr Reed,
If the disk worked on the work machine it should work on any computer.
Are you sure that the optical drive that you have in your home computer
is working ok? Do you have another to swap it with?  
I did have an issue that was never resolved with SUSE Linux Enterprise
Desktop edition that reminds me of this.  It would fail during the
installation...but it work on other computers.  I check EVERYTHING and
nothing worked. The systems used an Intel 845 chipset....that chipset
works fine on most I've tested and I've test about 40 of them....along
with many other Intel chipsets with Linux....is your systems at home
running off an Intel 845 chipset by any chance?
