Newbie is unable to install Ubuntu 6.06 LTS from DVD

I have a similar problem with a Sunfire x2100 that doesn't have a CD 
drive. I'm trying to install the server edition of 6.06 LTS and may end up 
using the method at 
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromLinux since it boots 
from an external CD drive but after the install begins it says it can't 
recognize that external drive.

On some of the later Intel motherboards (i.e., the ones capable of
using the Core duo), I've found that version 6.06 has problems
detecting the CD drive (an issue with the IDE components that Intel 
slapped on to the board at the last minute, when they realised how few
SATA CD drives are available). I had this problem installing on a
DG965RY board. My solution was to use 7.04 (the latest version), which
has a later kernel. An alternative, if that isn't an option, is to buy
a cheap external USB enclosure and temporarily put your CD drive in
that. The installer (in my experience) usually finds external CD
drives without any trouble.
