vmware player and USB devices

Hi,
I am running Ubuntu Feisty and have installed vmware-player and have a
Windows XP virtual machine. Everything works fine except my USB devices.
I have a Dell printer and a USB thumb drive, neither of which work
properly in the virtual machine. Vmware-player can detect the devices
and connect and disconnect them, but whenever I disconnect a device it
seems to cut the power to the USB port. Also, when I connect the device,
the guest OS seems not to know what to do with it. It knows that a
device was connected, but it can't seem to communicate with it. I even
get the warning about my device being slower than it should be because
it's a USB 2.0 device plugged into a USB 1.1 port, which is correct,
since the virtual hardware only supports USB 1.1. But beyond that I can
get no communication either with my printer or my thumb drive. The guest
OS tells me that the virtual USB controler is working properly. Does
anyone have any suggestions how to fix this? I can send the virtual
machine vmx file to anyone who needs it to diagnose my problem. I run
the latest 2.6.20-16 kernel on Feisty with all the updates through
yesterday.

Thanks for any help,
Lorenzo
