Just my point....   there are LOTS of editors *available* for every distro.  
My favorite is THE  (the Hessling Editor)  but I'll bet you've never heard of 
that one.

But vi is pretty widely available on any distro.   

As I said before, I don't use vi myself except to get a fresh install 
going....  when no other editors are available.
