im using wired ethernet to get my internet..no problems so far. however 
i havent tried the current Kubuntu (kubuntu 7.04) on any older machines. 
but heres the system requirements

64mb ram
2 gb hdd space
300 mhz 32-bit processor
VGA card capable of 640x480 graphics
CD-Rom

500 mhz 32 bit processor
192 mb ram
8 gig hdd
Graphics card capable of 1024x768 
Sound card
CD Rom
Networking card
