Drivers for Ubuntu

Since I didn't before install any video drivers (I don't have Linux for desktop) I cannot vouch for the correctness. But hopefully its gets you towards the right direction.

Next you should be picking either:

Linux IA32 if you are running 32-bit.
Linux AMD64/EM64T if you are running 64-bit.

If you are not sure, open a command window and type "cat /proc/version". This will provide a line like:
"Linux version 2.6.15-28-386 (buildd at terranova) (gcc version 4.0.3 (Ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu5)) #1 PREEMPT Wed Jul 18 22:50:32 UTC 2007"
Notice the "2.6.15-28-386" (which is for ubuntu 6.06 LTS), but the last part is important. If it is "386" or "686" than you should get the "IA32" binaries. If its "amd64" (I think), you should get the "AMD64/EM64T" binaries.

Pick the "Latest version", which at this point is 100.14.11.

There are instructions here how to do this.
1. Review the license.
2. Download the driver file
3. Install, but a slight note:
instead of doing "sh NVIDIA-...", rather type "sudo sh NVIDEA-..."
(In the command shell you can use the tab key to complete the file name)
You might be asked for you own password. The sudo command enables administrative permissions.

Hope this helps a bit...

	Hello Jan,

Thank you for your fast response.

I tried checking nVidia's website for the 7600GT driver (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp ) and clicked the Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris Drivers <http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html> link. I don't know which driver or link should I be clicking next.

Pardon me for my ignorance since this is totally new for me.

	Thank you very much!

Well, technically the 7600 GT only needs driver installation if you want 3D, but who doesn't want 3D? :p

Installation if the restricted binary driver is pie though. System → Administration → Restricted Devices Manager should cover it.

By the way, in case you're not familiar, the drivers are called restricted because they are binary closed source. There's really no need to let the language scare you, except for the inherent security weaknesses in using binary blobs. (You have to wait for nvidia to recognize/fix security issues)

Good luck with your new Ubuntu system. :)

The only piece of hardware that needs a driver is the 7600 GT. All other components are nativly supported.

				Hello,

				Good day!

I'm new to this OS since I've used Windows as an Operating System to my PC. I am planning to install and try it on my PC but I'm just wondering about the drivers I will be needing.

My system's hardware are as follows:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+, 2.01 GHz
				Video: nVidia GeForce 7600 GT
				Sound: Realtek HD Audio output
				Memory: 2048MB
				Connection: NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

Will I need to download Linux drivers or are there native drivers included in the Ubuntu OS which can support the hardware for my PC.

Any inputs will be very much appreciated.

				Thank you!
