Nonexistant xorg.conf but still able to run x

I've also had this experience in feisty.  If you read the 
/var/log/Xorg.0.log it will show that xorg probes all your hardware and 
selects the appropriate choices.  In my case, it chose the "vesa" driver 
for the ATI, instead of "fglrx", so I had to create an xorg.conf to get 
it to do 3D with fglrx.

I understand xorg-7.3 (in gutsy) will run without an xorg.conf 
altogether, but haven't seen it in action.
