low microphone recording volume

Hi there.

The volume that I can record at via the microphone jack on my IBM
Thinkpad T42 seems very low. The built-in microphone has the same
problem, so I don't think it's an impedenace problem or anything. The
levels available via the volume control are at maximum.

Is there anything else I can twiddle in the ALSA drivers?
