Feisty Install: slow to bring up apps

     Wow; great guess; I'm not sure it changes anything yet, but the 
default install gave me:

127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.1.1       ws01.altavista.local    ws01

     In /etc/hosts.  Kinda strange; I normally have 
"localhost.localdomain" and "localhost" on 127.0.0.1, and then the 
eth0's address for my own workstation name.  But I'll give this a try. 
It's funny how easy it is to overlook such things, ya know?
