Sound problem on mythtv box

In trying to get a box running ubuntu feisty as a mythtv box working better
I seem to have messed up the sound system-wide.  Sounds was working fine,
but now is not.

I have been looking at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems but so far not
found any solution which works.

Everything is unmuted, asoundconf and aplay see the sound card.  Maybe
modules for sound coming in from the Haupauge Nova DVB card and for those
going out the soundcard are conflicting?

Recording works fine, and if I copy the mythtv MPGs off to another ubuntu
machine they play fine under VLC.  I've copied the output of
asoundconf, lspci, dmesg, lsmod, /proc/asound/cards etc. to:

Does anyone have any suggestions?
