1. Not sure - mine is still working just fine. I get the white bar
across the kernel listing, and if I down arrow the white bar moves to
the next selection. Are you not getting this on your grub menu at boot?

2. Alt-F2 will switch to text mode. Not sure of what the key combo is to
switch back mid-stream, I'll need to try on a slow machine that doesn't
boot so fast later today. If you look at System|Preferences|Keyboard
Shortcuts you'll find most of the key combos available.
