Big mem issue

Hello all,
I plan to install 7.04 on a machine with more than 4GB of RAM. I've been
searching the list and it was suggested that I use linux-686 kernel.
But when I look into synaptic, it says that linux-686 has been obsolete by the
generic kernel. Does it mean that 7.04 now on default support big memory
above 4GB?
Any comments are welcome.
Thank you.
