Font rendering help please in Feisty

I was fooling around with KDE today after installing the 
kubuntu-desktop and changed some settings in there for the 
font rendering. When I logged back in to Ubuntu to my default 
Gnome desktop, the fonts were seriously messed up. I went back 
in to a KDE session and set everything back the way it was but 
it didn't improve anything in Gnome.

First off, how can changing something in KDE mess up the Gnome 
desktop? I didn't change anything in Gnome at all. Since then 
I've logged into another users Gnome desktop on this same 
machine. Their font rendering is fine so I copied the 
settings, checked my settings (system -> preferences -> font) 
and they are exactly the same.

I have no idea what I did but I set everything back to the way 
it was in KDE and I still have a mess. I've tried changing 
settings in Gnome (then logging out and back in again) and 
nothing seems to change the look of the fonts.

How do I get my gnome desktop back to the default font rendering?
