question from brand newbie re booting from Ubuntu 7.04 CD

ok i figured out how to get it to work, i sudo'ed into SH and then 
executed getty. worked like a charm
now im on, but the text looks like crap. its in regular form, but when i 
execute a command, it randomly places it all over the screen. is it just 
hyper terminal or is it normal?
