Just out of curiosity have you run apt-get update recently?? Also, You
said that you had done a remove/purge of the samba package??? are you
using aptitude, synaptic, or apt-get from the command line???

Yes, did update just before the purge/install. Did all with aptitude. But do use the gui's synaptic, adept(kubuntu-desktop) depending on what's convient at the time. Aptitude update has been acting up lately for me with very long pause on a security mirror; don't remember which. Expect the mirroe was having trouble as my downloads are usually fast on my dsl. Anyway, reinstalling samba-common fixed everything and don't know why aptitude missed only that depends. See my reply to NoOp as I still have samba setup issues.

thanks for you input,
