I wish that I had an answer for you & feel your pain :-) Unfortunately I
don't use kubuntu so not much help there. However I do have access to a
test windows VPN server on Monday and I'll be happy to give it a shot
then. [One of the reasons that I went with all hardware VPN devices,
Linksys BEFVP41's, for my customers was to avoid all of the software
client hassles.]
