Doing a ...
# dpkg -S nvidia
I get a list of install packages with nvidia headers
Nvidia-kernel-common
Linux-restricted-modules
Try re-installing these modules.

Subject: Re: problem with Xorg
I managed to install the nvidia driver in a rather unexpected way: I
rebooted my computer, and the X server broke again (ie failed to start)
that was quite convenient for me to install the driver so I used the
opportunity to do that
Then, I followed the readme instructions about editing xorg.conf, and
rebooted, with more errors (X still isn't working)
doing cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE gives me this:
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please
ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this
system, and
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that the NVIDIA device files have been created
properly.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please consult the NVIDIA README for details.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
Also, the boot screen gives me these messages about the X server:
Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module is version 1.0.7184, but
this X module is version 1.0.7185. Please be sure that your kernel
module and all NVIDIA driver files have the same driver version.

I think you should keep the normal runlevel 2 but stop gdm
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
then install the nvidia driver and afterwards restart gdm:
/etc/init.d/gdm start
If you are using Kubuntu, replace gdm with kdm.
