If you manage to set up an ssh server locally, you could use rsync
across ssh (should be configured this way by default in recent Ubuntu
distributions) to sync remote and local folders. Or, if you like to
have a visually appealing GUI, unison and unison-gtk also are tools
worth checking out (also doin' communication across ssh, thus being
fairly safe).
