Changing Runlevel in Edgy

Hi all, 

I am running Ubuntu Server 6.10 and installed gnome, now I am stuck in runlevel 5 with X starting automatically. I would prefer to have my system start in runlevel 3 and be able to start X when needed. How can I accomplish this with the new upstart program?
