connecting to ubuntu desktop from cygwin using xdmcp

I am trying to connect to my ubuntu 6.10 desktop from my windows box.
I run "X -query ip_address" and i get to the login window.
I type my username and password and it seems to be logging in, but my
desktop doesn't appear.
I am starting to suspect that I somehow need to install gnome
environment under cygwin
