display IP address on desktop

I simply added it to my taskbar under gnome.
First you need to logout of the desktop once after installing giplet.

Right click on the top or bottom panel.
"Add to Panel"
"Utilities" -> "Giplet" -> "Add" -> "Close"

This should add giplet to the task bar.
Probably displaying the IP address for "eth0".

To change the preferences:
Right click on the IP address.
"Preferences"
