display IP address on desktop

Odd.

 $ links2 -dump http://whatismyip.org
   
Gives my correct external IP address, (the WAN address of my router) 

Opening it in a browser like firefox gives a plain white page with the
number only, and grabbing it with wget gives a file containing only the IP
address, (no html tags), called, unsurprisingly, "index.html"  ;-)
