I have a similar problem with a win2k VM. I have a dual monitor setup with a
virtual screen spanning a laptop LCD and the external monitor. VMWare runs
in full screen mode, but only on the external monitor. Video is slow in the
VM but fine on the host. I've always assumed that it's because my intel 915
onboard videocard isn't powerful enough to handle everything. (I didn't have
the problem with the same VM on an older laptop that had a slower processor
and less RAM but did have a separate video card). Maybe not.

Have you tried the VMWare forums? They're quite helpful.
