Upgrade to Edgy failing on X11R6 error

Thank you for your detailed and helpful response!

I feel I've made some progress, and slammed into new problems.

Essentially, by doing the following command:
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite 
/var/cache/apt/archives/x11-common_1%3a7.1.1ubuntu6.2_i386.deb

It solved my X11R6 error, and I was able to execute this command without 
errors:
sudo apt-get -f install

I thought I might be home free, but when I ran this:
sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade

It slammed into a bunch of errors, starting with upgrading MythTV. 
MythTV is non-critical for me, so I thought I might be able to uninstall 
it and move on. But, when I tried to use Synaptic to uninstall it, it 
wouldn't let me do anything until I fixed the broken packages.

But, of course, when selecting to fix broken packages, it says it's 
"unable to correct dependancies".

If I do sudo "apt-get -f install" at the command line, it shows me a 
whole bunch of programs, not just MythTV, that are messed up.

I've included the error output below.

The thing is now I've noticed that all my system fonts and windows look 
a little different. Not unusable or unreadable, but everything is 
off-kilter, kind of like the themes or something were rolled back to an 
earlier version of Gnome. I know that description doesn't quite convey 
what I'm seeing, but to keep life simple, let's just say the Ubuntu 
interface has been affected by this install procedure.

So now I'm worried that I have a half installation, which, if I try to 
reboot, will die.

How can I resolve the errors below and complete this install?
