If you do need static IP, you can achieve the same effect by setting a
static arp in your router/access point, if that is available as an option
on your equipment. You can associate a MAC address with your desired LAN
IP. ( My router has this setting, YMMV)

Works well with my iBook using N-M , bcm43xx driver for Airport Extreme,
and a "Billion BiPAC 7300 GA " wireless/wired adsl2+ router...
