You have it wrong. Everybody is pointed at the Ubuntu repos because you are
likely to spend a long and ultimately frustrating time trying to use dpkg -
as you are finding out. dpkg works fine if you have a simple package with
no dependencies beyond what might be expected to be standard, but is far
too much hassle for anything complex. Get a CD or DVD if you can't do it
from the net.
