Installing 6.10 bug in logic about XFS

I am trying to install Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop and am running into a logic bug as I did on Xubuntu 6.10.
In my environment the /boot partition is ext3, all others are XFS, other than swap of course. It throws an error that XFS can not be booted from, and that is because Grub and XFS do not get along so
great. But that is why I opted for ext3 on /boot!
I installed Ubuntu 5.10 just fine on this very box. Back then it was the text mode installer.
Can anyone suggest a work around? Or can anyone dupe this and it become a real bug?
