Where did gxedit go?

Well a quick look at http://packages.debian.org/stable/editors/gxedit 
shows it's not stood the "angrykeyboarder test of time". ;-)

It's a GTK1 app.

GTK1 is soooooooooooo 20th century.

It's all about GTK2 now. :-)

But if you're into old and ugly, you could always compile from source. ;-)
