getting back Gnome after compiz

I installed Compiz and GL Desktop for a look. They're working pretty
well but there are too many small problems which make it annoying.

However when I try to boot into a Gnome session I only get as far as the
splash screen after the log on screen. I've tried reinstalling
ubuntu-desktop and that didn't help at all, so I tried xubuntu-desktop
and that was fine.

So how do I get the normal Gnome session working again?
