I've had this problem loads of times and found the only reliable way to 
make sure a CD or DVD can be read in (almost) any drive is to burn it at 
low speed.  It doesn't seem to matter how old the drive is, my new 
(couple of months old) DVD writer is no better then one a couple of 
years old.  The newer one is less fussy about the make of disc though.
Keep trying read it, I've known discs that have started to work after a 
several refusals to work.
