Pidgin has a command line interface (previously called Gaim-text),
called Finch. If you use Pidgin, I think you don't have to do any
configuration, because Finch uses your Pidgin configuration.

There is also CenterIM and another one I don't remember the name :(
(That one only worked with the MSN protocol though. Finch and CenterIM
work with serveral protocols.
